Fear of the Dentist

It’s quite common for young children to experience fear of the dentist, but did you know that it is almost as common in adults?

In the United States it is estimated that up to 75% of adults experience fear of the dentist and up to 5 to 10 % of those cases have severe dental phobia[1].  Because of this,  people avoid seeking treatment until they have a serious dental problem and as a result, treatment can end up being much more costly than if a dentist was seen on a regular basis and good oral health maintained.

These fears and phobias can be caused by a number of things, anything from personal experience to how Dentists have been portrayed in the Media. But at East Bentleigh Dental Group our focus isn’t so much on why you are scared of the dentist, but rather what we can do to help you overcome this fear.

On our website we have a list of things you can do to prepare for your visit to the dentist, which will help reduce anxiety…  http://www.melbourne-dentist.com.au/cosmetic-dentistry-information-for-patients-melbourne-victori/overcoming-dentist-anxiety-melbourne-cosmetic-dentist/

We also offer an audio track used to help patients relax which can be downloaded here http://www.melbourne-dentist.com.au/cosmetic-dentistry-information-for-patients-melbourne-victori/meditation/

If you still feel very anxious when you arrive we also provide a number of pain management options. http://www.melbourne-dentist.com.au/services-our-cosmetic-dental-treatments-melbourne-victoria/services-dental-pain-management-melbourne-victoria/services-managing-dental-pain-melbourne/

But the best thing to do is contact us prior to your visit and notify the staff of your concerns. This way we can tailor our treatment plans to take these into consideration.

It is our goal to make your appointment as pleasant as we can and hopefully while visiting the East Bentleigh Dental Group your perceptions of the Dentist may begin to change.
